  • Beginning next week Tuesday we will start taking our MAP tests. These are computer-based tests in 3 areas: Math, Reading, and Language Usage. We use this data to help better understand where our students' instructional levels are and so we can measure their academic growth. Please let me know if you have any more questions about these MAP Growth tests.

  • I sent some Friday T-shirts home on Friday. If you have ordered a t-shirt for your child and have not paid yet, please pay soon and I will give your child their t-shirt. If you have already paid and you do not have the t-shirt yet, I will hand the rest out Monday. We try to wear these shirts on Fridays and when we have field trips.

Friday News - August 31

First full week of school ✔

This week we worked on place value, and how to order and compare numbers in math; we learned how to explore the Bible; we wrote true stories about ourselves in writing; we did an experiment about water in science (for pictures go to the Photo Page at the top of the website); and we built up our reading stamina. We talked about Daily 5 (our reading program) and looked at the 5 choices we have to become better readers (and writers):

First week of school!

Hooray! We have finished our first week of school in 3.1!
Wow, it has been such a great week...I have loved getting to know each and every student a little bit and I cannot wait for the rest of this school year!

It was wonderful to meet many of you on Friday night's "Back to School" night :)

Here is a look at next week's spelling words and Bible memory verse:

Spelling words: (consonants and short vowels)
hundred    wobble     pocket      gutter     jacket     block     crush     stilts     skill     led     address     matter     yellow     tennis     never     stick     legs     sniff     during     eye

CHALLENGE WORDS: *this week we will NOT have challenge words -- just to get used to working on our 20 main spelling words. These words will be a little harder than normal and will be worth bonus points if spelled correctly (no penalty for spelling them wrong)

Bible Memory Verse:
Psalm 119:11
I have hidden your word in my heart so that I won't sin against you

  • We will have a spelling test every Friday
  • I will expect each student to be able to say the memory verse by Friday
Throughout the week I encourage you to practice the spelling words & memory verse with your child at home, for extra practice.

Today, your child will be coming home with a Homework Checklist for the week:

Friday Folders -
  • Every Friday your child will take home a tan envelope/folder, called Friday Folders. Please check inside these folders because I will send home important papers, tests, etc. On the front I would like a parent/guardian to sign each week. Soon the students will start taking AR reading-comprehensive quizzes on books they check out from the library. I will record the book they read and took a test on each week.

So please look for my blog posts, at the end of every week -- for updates; what we are learning each week, photos, and next week's spelling words and Bible memory verse. I will also post important upcoming events & the dates for those things (please look for them at the top right under "Important Dates").

Please do not hesitate to email me at brittanyengbers@ocsi.org
Also, check out the school's website http://ocsi.org/

Thank you so much & God bless!
- Ms. Engbers
